The People First (Havering) Team
People First (Havering) offers formal, self and group advocacy and welcomes anyone with a learning difficulty living in Havering.
Since the 1990's People First (Havering) has grown into a self advocacy group that has a strong presence in Havering and nationwide.
The strength of People First (Havering) is due to the way that it's members and staff have always looked at all the choices that a person could have in their lives.
Most barriers are due to the attitudes of others, so a lot of problems can be solved if looked at in a positive way.
Our management committee and members are currently looking at ways to involve all of our members in their local community, by holding regular self advocacy meetings and offering community based activities.
One-to-one formal advocacy is used when people are not being heard. The formal advocate can represent or support any person with a learning difficulty in Havering who needs someone to speak up on their behalf.
Our aim is to make sure that people receive the same treatment as they would if they didn't have learning difficulties.
What is FORMAL ADVOCACY?
Time limited support for a person, with a learning difficulty living in Havering, through a problem or crisis.
For example:
-
Support in finding help if moving.
-
support in finding help with benefits, employment and money issues.
-
help in finding health care if the person is unwell
-
support when a person is not being heard, maybe at a review or special meeting such as a case conference
Which wallpaper? Which snack? What job do I want? Where shall I live?
The formal advocate will listen to the person helping them to make as many choices for themselves and to gain the confidence to speak out. A formal advocate can support the person at meetings and can ensure that people hear the persons views.
Once issues are resolved, as much as possible, the case is closed but further issues can be referred.
